POWER FRIENDING IRL AND CYBERSPACE

During my birthday on May 25 I got 99 mentions on Facebook.

Is this an example of the power of new media? If you are interested in this topic, I recommend you to read Amber Mac's book, Power Friending: Demystifying Social Media to Grow Your Business. [Nota Bene: Amazon affiliate link. If you want to support my blogging and read a great book at the same time, please click the link and purchase Amber Mac's book.]

How many friends do you have on Facebook? I am getting close to 1,000 (power) friends... What's your take on the Dunbar's number and the social media tool called, Path?

In the evening, I got social and had dinner at a Mexican restaurant together with three of my friends that I am doing business (according to the trader principle) with:

After the dinner I went to Café Hammock, listening to Elecro Swing (jazz) music.

HEROES OF CAPITALISM

I have added Heroes of Capitalism to my blog list (left column). [Hat tip to: Gus Van Horn.]

I want to add Victor Borge as a hero of show business.

In 1953, his one-man show, Comedy in Music began a run of 849 performances, the Broadway record for a solo show. Borge became the highest-paid television entertainer of his day. For two shows in America in 1956 - he limited himself to two a year - he was paid £100,000. (Telegraph.co.uk, August 23, 2001.)

I want to visit the exhibition, Victor Borge: A Centennial Celebration at Scandinavia House in New York City.

Who would you pick as a hero of capitalism?

MERRY YULE LOG POST

I wish my fellow bloggers, friends and readers a Merry Yule! Do you know where the X-mas tradition is coming from?

Put another Yule log on the fire, have a Solstice D'hiver beer in order to celebrate the "rebirth" of the sun. If you want to understand why it is appropriate for an atheist to celebrate Christmas, read Robert Tracy's post, Merry Christmas! Check out Hot For Words for an explanation of the words, Christmas, Xmas, and Santa Claus.

I have created a Xmas playlist on iLike.

Talking about music, I will listen to Radio Dismuke's New Year's Eve/Day Broadcast Schedule.

BILL GATES AT WEDDING IN GOTHENBURG

Now I understand why a central part of Gothenburg city had been blocked for regular traffic on Saturday afternoon... From Peter Vinthagen Simpson's article, Bill Gates in Sweden for high society wedding.

The weekend will not be all champagne and canapés for the Microsoft billionaire as he has been appointed as one of the ushers for the service which will begin at 2pm on Saturday.

With security tight, Gates, the happy couple and the other key figures in the ceremony were taken through their paces for the rehearsal on Friday afternoon.

All the details of the rehearsal were completed in time for the weekend's festivities to begin with a reception at Gothenburg's art museum on Friday evening. Gates arrived early and told the assembled media:

"It feels great to be here," on being asked what it was like to be in Sweden. ...

Simonyi and Swedish socialite Lisa Persdotter were engaged on 08/08/08 in the romantic setting of St.Tropez in the south of France.

Simonyi, likes Gates, is an active philanthropist and is known as something of a jetset billionaire.

His jetset lifestyle has not only been limited to the planet Earth and he caught the headlines last year when he spent 13 days in outer space on a trip that set him back a modest $25 million. He is preparing for his second trip into space, in 2009, that will make him the first tourist to make a second journey into the great beyond.

Charles Simonyi has been described by scientist Richard Dawkins as "a sort of combination of International Renaissance Man, Playboy of the Scientific World, Test Pilot of the Intellect, and Space-age Orbiter of the Mind as well as of the Planet." (The Local, November 22, 2008.)

YUJA WANG

Have you heard about classical pianist Yuja Wang? Here is an excerpt from Lawrence A. Johnson's article, The restless, intellectual life of 21-year-old Wang. [Via Randex.]

In addition to a voracious appetite for music, the depth of Wang's taste in reading is impressive in an age when The Da Vinci Code is considered classic literature. ''Right now I'm reading The Idiot by Dostoyevsky,'' she says. ''And I read Nietzsche's Thus Sprach Zarathustra and Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. And I love Victor Hugo. I read no trash,'' she laughs. (The Miami Herald, October 10, 2008.)

MOBILE TALK ON TECH TUESDAY

My Qtek 9100 smartphone is not working at the moment and it is a risk that I can't retrieve the data from it. I am now feeling a bit "empty" and I am trying to remember dates and future events that I have planned and added to the mobile calendar. I couldn't synchronize the date from the mobile phone to my computer due to the fact that I have a computer with a Linux operating system. It looks that I have to back to my old Filofax from the 90's...

Please give me suggestions on a mobile phone that could fit my purposes. I want to have a decent camera built in so I could continue with my mobile cat blogging. I want to be able to listen to podcasts and music. I am not good at following directions and maps, so it would be nice with a GPS so I could find my way... I am not sure how much I will surf the web and use email on the go. It should be easy to use. My brother showed me his iPhone and I was amazed by the elegance and nice touch to it. But I wonder if it is not better to wait and see what could develop in the near future, for example an Android phone.

EGO AND RACHMANINOFF ON RADIO

I sent an email with a music request to the classic radio station on Radio Sweden. They decided to play the piano concerto no. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The producer and the host of the radio program were intrigued by my dreams and my wish to find a romantic partner in the United States of America. Listen to the short conversation and the music. Play forward to around 9:25, May 23.

GOOD THINGS GOING

I got interested in listening to Rhonda Vincent's record, Good Thing Going, after I read this review in a Swedish newspaper. It gave the record the highest score (6 dots on a dice).

[Editor's comment: Do you know about the origin of the word, bluegrass? Talking about this kind of music, please check out my friends, Rum River Blend, in Troy, Ohio.]
